Rema Wins Big at MTV EMA’s Award, but Burna Boy Loses 3 Awards

In a night filled with both triumph and disappointment, the 2023 MTV Europe Music Awards left an indelible mark on the music industry. Nigerian sensation Divine Ikubor, popularly known as Rema, emerged as one of the evening’s brightest stars, winning the inaugural ‘Best Afrobeats’ award.

The addition of the ‘Best Afrobeats’ category marked a significant milestone for Afrobeats artists on the international stage. Rema faced tough competition, with the category featuring notable contenders, including French superstar Aya Nakamura and homegrown talents such as Asake, Ayra Starr, Burna Boy, Davido, and Rema himself.

Due to the Israel-Hamas war, the physical award ceremony was canceled. However, the winners were announced on Sunday, November 6, 2023, bringing excitement to fans worldwide. Rema’s victory in the ‘Best Afrobeats’ category was met with cheers and celebration.

Tanzania’s Diamond Platnumz also shone at the awards, securing the ‘Best African Act’ title. Meanwhile, Rema and Selena Gomez’s collaboration, ‘Calm Down,’ was nominated for ‘Best Collaboration’ but lost out to Jung Kook and Latto’s ‘Seven’ in a closely contested category.

Despite the evening’s jubilation, Grammy Award-winning artist Burna Boy faced disappointment as he lost in three categories: ‘Best Afrobeats,’ ‘Best African Act,’ and ‘Best Live Performer.’ This outcome added to a string of losses for Burna Boy, as he recently missed out on all seven nominations at the 2023 BET Hip-Hop Awards.

In contrast, American singer Taylor Swift dominated the night, claiming three prestigious awards at the 2023 MTV Europe Music Awards. She was honored with the titles of ‘Best Video,’ ‘Best Artist,’ and ‘Best Live.’

Congratulations are in order for all the winners, as they continue to shine in the ever-evolving world of music and entertainment. Stay tuned for more exciting updates and highlights in the world of music, exclusively on Naijatraffic.
