Tyler Joseph, who was born in Columbus, Ohio, had a childhood with two younger brothers named Zack and Jay Joseph, as well as a sister named Madison Brett.
His mother, Kelly Joseph, used to be a math teacher but later became a high school basketball coach, while his father, Christopher Anthony Joseph, has both Lebanese and American roots and worked as a coach and former school principal.
During his early years, Joseph was homeschooled and developed a passion for music through listening to Christian rap rock group DC Talk and indie band The Killers.
He was also influenced by actor Jim Carrey and excelled in basketball, playing as a point guard for his high school team and even making it to the state tournament.
He had the opportunity to share the basketball court with Nick Thomas, who would later become the bassist for Twenty One Pilots, and together they performed the national anthem at games.
CAREER
In 2007, Tyler Joseph made his debut on YouTube as part of a channel called “slushieguys,” where he shared comedic skits. Although the channel’s last upload was in 2013, it has managed to gain over 122,000 followers.
After witnessing a songwriter perform at a club, Joseph made the decision to pursue music instead of accepting a basketball scholarship.
Tyler Joseph, the frontman of Twenty One Pilots, used an old keyboard that belonged to his mother to create melodies that imitated popular songs.
He worked on his music independently and in 2007-2008, he produced an album called “No Phun Intended” in his basement. He enlisted the guitar skills of Thomas to add depth to the tracks.
Joseph has fond memories of his mother’s support during this time, as she would promote his shows outside Ohio State University and proudly invite strangers to attend.
During the period of 2007-2008, before the formation of Twenty One Pilots, Tyler Joseph recorded a collection of songs called “No Phun Intended” on his own.
These songs, which included “Taken by Sleep” and “Blasphemy,” were released on his PureVolume account on November 30, 2008.
The album was created in Joseph’s basement while he was still in high school and featured contributions from Nick Thomas on guitar.
Although the project was taken down in 2015, fans managed to compile and preserve the tracks.
Additionally, an online release of a song called “Going Down” and an untitled demo by Joseph occurred on July 2, 2018.
Twenty One Pilots was formed in 2009 in Columbus, Ohio. Initially, the band consisted of Tyler Joseph as the frontman, Thomas as the bassist, and Chris Salih as the drummer. However, Salih left the band in 2011.
After their first album was released in December 2009, the group embarked on a tour in Ohio and later released their second album, Regional at Best, in 2011, featuring only Joseph and drummer Josh Dun.
The band’s third album, Vessel, was released on January 8, 2013, coinciding with their “Quiet Is Violent World Tour.”
On March 17, 2015, the band released their fourth album, Blurryface. The high demand from fans caused the website to crash when they tried to pre-order it, and it was unexpectedly dropped on May 17, 2015.
They extensively toured with the Blurryface and Emotional Roadshow World Tours, and their efforts were recognized when they won Best Pop Duo/Group Performance at the 59th Annual Grammy Awards.
Their fifth album, Trench, was announced on July 11, 2018, and they kicked off The Bandito Tour on October 16, 2018.
Prior to the album’s launch on August 27, 2018, they released key music videos such as “Nico and the Niners” and “My Blood.”
On April 9, 2020, Twenty One Pilots released “Level of Concern,” a song that reflects on the stress caused by the pandemic.
They filmed the music video at their homes during lockdown and donated a portion of the proceeds to Crew Nation.
To the surprise of their fans, they released the holiday track “Christmas Saves the Year” on December 8, 2020.
Their latest album, Scaled and Icy, was released on May 21, 2021, and shortly after, on May 24, 2024, they dropped their seventh album, Clancy.
The first single from the album, titled “Overcompensate,” made its debut on February 29, 2024, along with the exciting news of accompanying music videos that were released simultaneously with the album.
