The Presidency denied claims by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) that President Bola Tinubu went back on a promise to keep fuel prices steady.
Abdulaziz Abdulaziz, a media aide to the President, called the NLC’s statements “political games.”
Abdulaziz clarified that he was present at two meetings where President Tinubu and labor leaders discussed minimum wage negotiations, emphasizing that there were no talks of raising fuel prices in exchange for a wage hike.
The NLC accused President Tinubu of breaking the trust of Nigerians by raising fuel prices despite assuring stable prices.
The union stated that a key condition for agreeing to the N70,000 national minimum wage was a commitment to not raise fuel prices.
Contrary to the NLC’s accusations, Abdulaziz rejected their claims, asserting that President Tinubu never guaranteed such a promise.
He tweeted, “I sat through the two meetings President @officialABAT had with Labour leaders on minimum wage. At neither of the meetings was an offer made in exchange for a fuel price hike. Ajaero is once again playing his dirty politics with the emotions of Nigerians.”
The NLC has criticized the government’s recent increase in fuel prices, calling it a breach of trust.
The labor union has requested the rollback of the fuel price hike, an stop to the suppression of protestors, and an end to interference with the Ministry of Labour and Employment’s responsibilities.
