A leader in the Labour Party, Callistus Uju Okafor, has stated that the gathering of the party’s important members organized by Governor Alex Otti of Abia State goes against the party’s rules and is not useful.
In a statement, Okafor criticized the meeting that led to Senator Nenadi Usman being named as the temporary national chairman, calling it unauthorized. He advised Nigerians and party supporters to be careful of troublemakers.
Okafor referred to the party’s 2009 Constitution and a court ruling from March 20, 2018, to further criticize the legitimacy of the stakeholders’ meeting.
He stated, “We want to bring to the notice of the general public that the jamboree gathering tagged, Labour Party stakeholders meeting, held in Umuahia, Abia State, is unconstitutional and not known to any organisation of the party.
“Dr Alex Otti and Mr Peter Obi do not have the constitutional authority to convene any party meeting.”
Okafor challenged Governor Otti to show a letter from INEC allowing him to arrange the meeting. The Labour Party’s National Working Committee, led by Julius Abure, distanced itself from the meeting’s outcomes in Umuahia held yesterday.
In a statement, the party criticized the meeting as illegal and against the party’s rules. The Labour Party clarified that the meeting wasn’t authorized by the party and doesn’t reflect its official position or interests. The party advised its members and the public to ignore any decisions or statements made during the meeting.
The statement read, “The Labour Party disowns the outcome of the Umuahia stakeholders meeting convened by Governor Alex Otti. The meeting is illegal and unconstitutional, and we urge our members to disregard any resolutions from this gathering.”
