Facts About Food Poisoning And Proper Response Measures

After consuming poisonous food, it is often a common belief that substances like palm oil, milk, or charcoal can help counteract the effects of the poison.

However, it is essential to question the efficacy of these methods.

This is particularly crucial in light of recent unfortunate incidents where individuals reportedly succumbed to poisoned food.

When dealing with food poisoning, it is crucial to administer the most effective first aid measures.

Does palm oil protect you from poison?

While some might advocate for the use of palm oil to combat poisoning effects, this practice is not without risks.

Palm oil is sometimes used to induce vomiting as a response to poison ingestion.

Although palm oil might initially absorb certain toxins, it can subsequently allow them to enter the lungs, resulting in serious complications.

When the poison is oil-based, it can combine with palm oil, heightening its toxicity. Contrary to common misconceptions, palm oil does not neutralize poisons and can increase gastric volume in the stomach, causing more damage than benefit.

It is important to refrain from administering palm oil to anyone who has consumed a toxic substance, as it is ineffective and could lead to serious health issues.

Utilizing charcoal after experiencing poisoning

A prevalent misconception is that regular household charcoal can be used as a treatment for poisoning.

While medical facilities might employ activated charcoal in specific poisoning instances, this differs significantly from standard cooking charcoal.

Activated charcoal undergoes a process to eliminate contaminants, rendering it safe for consumption. Its porous nature captures toxins and chemicals within the intestines, stopping them from being absorbed into the bloodstream.

In contrast, regular cooking charcoal carries impurities and lacks these beneficial properties, making it both ineffective and unsafe.

Activated charcoal, which can be found in pharmacies, may aid in treating certain poisoning types if taken promptly. However, it does not work on substances such as alcohol, corrosives, lithium, or petroleum-based items.

Is consuming milk advisable?

However, this approach can potentially exacerbate the situation.

Milk is not an effective remedy for food poisoning, as it can irritate the stomach lining, hinder dairy digestion, and encourage bacterial growth, potentially worsening issues like vomiting and diarrhea.

When to make yourself vomit
Inducing vomiting is only beneficial within an hour post-poisoning and can be risky if petroleum-based products like gasoline or kerosene are involved, as this may lead to serious respiratory issues.

Instead of attempting to vomit at home, head to the hospital immediately.

How to handle poisoning

1. Avoid consuming anything (including

water, milk, alcohol, or regular charcoal) after the poisoning incident.

2. Seek medical help without delay.

Bring along the substance or item that caused the poisoning to the hospital so that medical professionals can provide appropriate treatment.

In poisoning situations, prompt medical assistance is crucial for the best chance of recovery.
